For buyers hoping to sink their teeth into Bran Castle — a mountain-top fortress in Romania that was the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s Count Dracula’s castle — sadly, the property is not up for sale, according to the British newspaper Express. Rumors began flying recently that the Gothic castle had been put up for sale for a wallet-draining £46 million. Another similar property nearby, Silver Mountain mountain-top leisure resort, actually is for sale, which may have caused the confusion. The property’s owners have put all speculation to rest, explaining that not only is the property, which is largely used as a tourist destination, not for sale, it is currently undergoing a huge renovation. Hoping to breath new life into the creepy manse, the owners are building an electric elevator in the solid rock of the mountain, which will connect the castle to the gardens. Rich in history, the castle was built in the early 13th Century by the Teutonic Knights to protect the Transylvanian border from fierce nomadic warrior tribes. While Bram Stoker had never actually visited Romania, he based his character’s home on a description of Bran Castle he had heard. In his novel, Dracula’s remote home is described as “a vast ruined castle, from whose tall black windows came no ray of light, and whose broken battlements showed a jagged line against the sky.” According to the castle’s website, Stoker also took the idea of the undead haunting the area from a local legend of the strigoi — people who lived normally during the day but whose souls left their bodies at night. “ These evil spirits haunt their prey from midnight until the first cockcrow, when their power to harm people faded.” Tags: Castles.
