You can now download classics like Night of the Living Dead and Plan 9 From Outer Space via Bit Torrent from the Internet Archive. Internet Archive founder Brewster Kahle announced on Tuesday that the site is now offering over 1 million torrents spanning movies, radio shows, live music concerts, books and other free public domain works. Kahle said the site chose Bit Torrent as the primary download service because of its overall speed. Still, visitors wary of the peer-to-peer network can use the old-fashioned method of downloading via HTTP and HTTPS. Bit Torrent is the now fastest way to download items from the Archive, because the Bit Torrent client downloads simultaneously from two different Archive servers located in two different data centers, and from other Archive users who have downloaded these Torrents already, he said. As he points out, the distributed nature of Bit Torrent swarms and their ability to retrieve Torrents from local peers may benefit Internet Archive visitors with slower access to the Archive, including those living outside the United States or inside institutions with slow connections. Thank you, Bit Torrent community, for evolving such a valuable technology for the rapid, reliable, and resilient distribution of large numbers of files, he said. So what exactly is the Internet Archive offering to download? Anything that's in the public domain. The site's Top 25 downloads include Isaac Asimov's awesome Foundation trilogy of books, the movie Plan 9 From Outer Space (1959 Night of the Living Dead (1969 episodes of The Three Stooges, Alice's Adventures, House on Haunted Hill (1959) and loads more. I supported the original creation of Bit Torrent because I believe in building technology to make it easy for communities to share what they have, said John Gilmore, founder of the Electronic Frontier Foundation. The Archive is helping people to understand.

Friday Download: Click the title to download the torrent file Night of the Living Dead/ 1968 Night of the Living Dead is the OG zombie movie; it marked a new dawn in horror film-making. Without it, there probably would be no Walking Dead, no Zombies vs. Vampires, no Nazi Zombies in Co D. Watch the classic film that began a national argument: How horrifying can you make a horror film? Planet 9 from Outer Space/ 1959 Plan 9 is a classic from B-movie auteur and hero Ed Wood. Wood is a filmmaker so beloved, his fans hail him as their savior. Seriously. Also, Glen Danzig of The Misfits named their independent record label Plan 9, creating a cult around their B-movie horror themed songs. The Phantom of the Opera/ 1925 Phantom of the Opera is an obvious classic. It’s success paved the way for more Universal-backed horror film favorites: Dracula, Frankenstein, The Wolf Man, The Invisible Man, and The Mummy. Also notable: Eric Chaney (the actor who played the phantom) did his own makeup, and when his face was revealed, audiences screamed. Just a warning.
